Mission Statement

The Center for Service Learning and Social Entrepreneurship fosters a campus culture of meaningful and productive service and service-based learning and scholarship for the mutual benefit of the broader community and CNU students, faculty, and staff.  Working to establish viable campus-community partnerships, the Center facilitates programs that help meet community-defined needs while assisting students to learn social and civic values as they gain and apply academic knowledge and skills.

The Center supports the University’s learning environment by assisting faculty and students in the development of their scholarly projects, grants and proposals for social change. In addition, the Center advances strategies for integrating community-based learning into the undergraduate experiences of CNU students and trains and supports faculty as they incorporate these activities into their courses, sharing best practices within and outside the University.

Center Programs

1.  Volunteer CNU

Volunteer CNU makes it possible for students to volunteer in the local, regional and international communities for brief as well as semester or summer long projects. Unlike service learning courses, Volunteer CNU offers no academic credit but

provides students with meaningful, well-supervised opportunities that make a difference.  With its database of organizationsVolunteer CNU serves as a gateway experience for students interested in reaching out to the local, national and international communities in order to benefit  less fortunate people, the environment and the public good.

2.  Service Learning Academic Courses

Service Learning courses allow faculty to create a meaningful community service experience in academic courses, thereby enriching  both the classroom environment and benefitting the community.  Students learn academic theories and analysis and then apply these new abilities while serving the community for the common good.

3.   Minor in Civic Engagement and Social Entrepreneurship

This interdisciplinary program offers an 18 credit minor for students who wish to develop the perspective and analytical skills required of social entrepreneurs— individuals who desire to use their training and insight to engage and solve some of the most pressing problems in our society.  CNU’s interdisciplinary, undergraduate minor is the first in this region and provides a focus for altruistic, young, leaders at the University.
