Service Learning: Best Practices

Based on its definition, a service learning course integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

The CNU Center for Service Learning & Social Entrepreneurship recommends these following Basic Standards for faculty planning to teach a service learning course:

Exemplary Service-Learning Syllabi

  • Include service as an expressed goal
  • Clearly describe how the service experience will be measured and what will be measured
  • Describe the nature of the service placement and/or project
  • Specify the roles and responsibilities of students in the placement and/or service project, (e.g., transportation, time requirements, community contacts, etc.- see below for how our Center can help with this)
  • Define the need(s) the service placement meets
  • Specify how students will be expected to demonstrate what they have learned in the placement/project (journal, papers, presentations)
  • Present course assignments that link the service placement and the course content
  • Include a description of the reflective process
  • Include a description of the expectations for the public dissemination of students' work

Staff at the Center can handle the administrative pieces required so you can focus on teaching!

How this Works at CNU

  • We will organize all student registration forms and send you a spreadsheet of their placements.
  • We will collect Time Sheets of the student's service hours, calculate the totals, and provide you with the results.
  • We will provide beginning and end of semester reports on class enrollment, hours served, and evaluations.
  • In addition, we are happy to assist in brokering relationships with community partners, and following up on any concerns or questions regarding student projects.

Please contact Center Director, Roberta Rosenberg if you have any questions about Service Learning standards or the process of enrollment.   If you are ready to consider curricular design for a service learning course, please click here.
